synopsis
a small town kid has a revelation one day that provides inspiration for a business idea. he gets online and learns how to code and then builds a website, business plan, executive summary and powerpoint deck and raises some funds from friends and family who are dr's, lawyers, and other small town professionals (think Rocky montage scene w/ stan bush's 'you got the touch' in the background: http://www.ifilm.com/video/2670533f). the next phase of the movie connects our hero with his team, an international assortment of programmers in india, china, estonia (founders of skype make cameo) and australia (the hot programmer chick from transformers http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1592225/). the story then follows the launch and spectacular growth of this international team (think startup.com / cosmo.com mixed with babel). the company ends up failing but the kid learns a valuable lesson about business, people's motivations and life. the kid then is torn between starting another company or moving back to his small town and he choses starting another company...
Note: alternate film title could be "You Got the Touch"

I love the picture references
Good picture references. Is the 'Startup.com' movie any good?
There could be tons of great cameos by other start up founders. Also, could include some of the main players in India and China (Nandan Nilekani, CEO of Infosys, for example) to help tell the story from different perspectives like a 'Babel' or 'Traffic'.
Thanks!
thanks dude, yeah, i think a good startup movie is just waiting to happen. startup.com is pretty cool. if we could get the hot programmer chick from transformers i think this movie would be gold. and a cameo from stan bush. a few feature requests: email invite to friends to contribute to my movie; ability to invite users to join collab team (is this already done?); possible titles text boxes; possible actors text boxes; ability for community to make proposed revisions and owner to approve, reply/deny changes.
Anything is possible with the hot programmer chick
Thanks for the suggestions. Email invite is key, I am working on figuring out the best way to delegate permissions on each idea. The original poster would become the administrator for a group built around that idea. Instead of typical social network friends , each idea would have a group of participants and you would be connected to other users through the film groups you were a part of.
I like the idea of having the possible titles and possible actors text boxes.
the office
get some humor similar to that in The Office while you're at it. Esp the scene where they are slow-mo smashing the printer to a complete Tupac gangsta style passion-piece. Maybe while the young genius is gleaning the money for his startup (and "working people over" in clever/witty ways). A little lighter on the early end of the film, n'est-ce pas?
Monica.
I agree
You could definitely have some fun with the young entrepreneur's initial inspiration and transition from the typical 9-5 to the early stages of the start-up. Things don't get dark until he starts to shoulder the burden of investors and rapid growth.
****
i like it
idea is good, babel is bad
Idea could be good, I just can't get past how over-hyped i thought babel was.
really?!
of course Babel was hyped big time---but i thought it was great. truly a movie of 2006. however, i thought it was just way too sad and depressing. there wasn't a happy scene in the whole bloody picture.
babel was OK
I thought babel was only mediocre, myself.
why i referenced babel...
i guess we could cut the babel part out. i was just thinking of the way you've got all these different stories around the world that tie together through that gun; but in this case it would be tied together with the startup...
Nah leave it in!
I get the babel reference. Its not necessarily the story but how the story unfolds that matters for the idea.
leave it in for sure
I actually liked Babel, alot.
Been Done
See the movie Purpose (2002)
true but..
I think there is room for other films in this area, especially with the current atmosphere around Silicon Valley, start up founders are younger, and doing way more with way less than before.
I agree
This could be super cool as a parody of all the Valley kids starting copycat web services.
